Nice pick with the Borat, I think you might like it. I know that I laughed a lot. Also nice with the Superman returns (see what I said about Borat and take the same for this, except for the “laughed a lot” part).
We’ll see about the borat. I didn’t laugh in the trailers or in the 15 minute preview online. I’m renting it solely on your recommendation.
I heard Supes Returns could use a giant spider right at the beginning of the third act. We’ll see. I’m coordinating this rental with Patti’s rental of Superman: The Movie.
Meh, me neither. I’ve been trying to get stuff that both Patti and I can watch on Wed. and stuff that only I want to see on Sat. But, Patti doesn’t like very many good movies. Then she complains when I go off and watch a movie on my own.
i get the Brisco (have gotten the Brisco), Go was an ok movie, and if you haven’t seen it then I can understand that one. Unforgiven was a good movie and also understandable. Seven up I have never heard of, Steve Zissou is something I want to see myself, so I understand that. But here comes the part of the list that bottles my mind. Road Trip? Not a bad movie, Amy Smart shows her boobs, there is an awesome group singing thing (a la Waynes World), but I don’t understand…unless you haven’t seen it. The Searchers, I have to be in a serious John Wayne jones to go with the Searchers. Lock, Stock I have never seen so I can’t really comment. And the last two I have never heard of before. I just don’t get this list.
Netflix kept on recommending The Searchers. I do like Westerns.
Most of the movies you haven’t heard of are documentaries. As you know by now, I tend to like a good doc. These are ones that were either recommended to me or sounded good to me.
I can’t believe you have Monster Squad at number 1. We haven’t talked about it have we, I know I have been hyping it up, but I didn’t think I had hyped it up to you. Nice choice either way. If you haven’t seen it, you’re in for a treat. So long as you aren’t expecting the Second Coming. It is a fun movie, that wears its 80s charm on its sleeve. Its a lot like Goonies, except the kids in this seem more real, probably because of language used. Then again, its not a lot like Goonies, because it never takes itself as seriously as Goonies does. Either way, nice choice.
Monster Squad was good, but you have to watch it in a certain light (i.e. you have to realize that it is a kid’s movie from the 80’s). Patti wasn’t interested in watching it at all. By the end she was saying it was a pretty decent flick.
Overall, it’s no Goonies but it is better than any live action kid’s movie out now a days (and better than most CGI/animated kid’s movies out now a days). I liked the fact that the kids swore and there was suxual references. It is kind of how kids actually talk when they hang out.
Check out the Time Traveller’s Wife by Anne Niffeneger (or something close to that). I realize that this isn’t a book blog, but it is being made into a movie, so it works. Seriously, I dug the hell out of this book, and have to recommend it to everyone. You should go out and buy it yourself, otherwise you will be taking it home with you when you come here in October. But check it out, really damn good book.
I just started Jurrasic (sp?) Park. Patti’s been on me to read that for the past 3 years (or more).
I had heard of the Time Traveller’s Wife (or at least the movie version) before. The movie is supposed to have some decent actors in it… I think. Mark Ruffalo or something.
Ron Livingston, Rachael McAdams and Eric Bana. The book is better than the movie, I will say that without the movie even being out yet. And this book is definitely better than Jurassic Park, we teach that to High Scool freshmen dude.
Jurassic Park was read by some Eisenhower Middle School English classes. Chris was, apparently, in the group that read it. I was in a group that didn’t. Instead, my group read… um… I don’t know. I didn’t read whatever they assigned.
Hey Patti- When I was in high school one of the honors BIOLOGY classes got extra credit for reading Jurassic Park. Talk about outrage. And what’s up with all the outraged basketball fans? Does no one do any work at work anymore? WOW. No real comments on your “Q”. I just got Office season 3 on DVD, I’ll have to write about that a little later.
They shipped the Lookout yesterday. I’ll receive it today. I’ll let you know how it is once I have watched it.
As far as District B13, I’ve heard it was a good action flick. Also, Luc Besson wrote the script for it (he also wrote Unleashed, Leon, and The Fifth Element). So, I’m willing to give it a chance.
BTW, how many people would watch a movie based solely on the writer of said flick?
I think we need to start a trend of checking out movies based on the screenwriters. I mean it makes more sense than checking movies out solely based on directors (unless you are really into a certain visual style).
Mike and I just saw Vertigo. It was horrible. Mike kept wanting to turn it off, but I kept it on thinking it would eventually get good. It never did. Same thing with his pick of “The Fountain”. But I know you liked that movie so you may end up liking Vertigo.
Two new studies show why some people are more attractive for members of the opposite sex than others.
The University of Florida, Florida State University found that physically attractive people almost instantly attract the attention of the interlocutor, sobesednitsy with them, literally, it is difficult to make eye. This conclusion was reached by a series of psychological experiments, which were determined by the people who believe in sending the first seconds after the acquaintance. Here, a curious feature: single, unmarried experimental preferred to look at the guys, beauty opposite sex, and family, people most often by representatives of their sex.
The authors believe that this feature developed a behavior as a result of the evolution: a man trying to find a decent pair to acquire offspring. If this is resolved, he wondered potential rivals. Detailed information about this magazine will be published Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
In turn, a joint study of the Rockefeller University, Rockefeller University and Duke University, Duke University in North Carolina revealed that women are perceived differently by men smell. During experiments studied the perception of women one of the ingredients of male pheromone-androstenona smell, which is contained in urine or sweat.
The results were startling: women are part of this repugnant odor, and the other part is very attractive, resembling the smell of vanilla, and the third group have not felt any smell. The authors argue that the reason is that the differences in the receptor responsible for the olfactory system, from different people are different.
It has long been proven that mammals (including human) odor is one way of attracting the attention of representatives of the opposite sex. A detailed article about the journal Nature will publish.
Also, I don’t see how it is relevant to my netflix queue.
Last, if you have seen Penn and Teller’s Bullshit, you would realize that pheramones don’t make a difference in attraction. Holding everything else constant, they showed that the women chose the second man in the experiment regardless of who was wearing the cologne with pheramones. I tend to believe P&T a bit more than your FSU, Duke, and Rockefeller.
next you’ll be renting episodes of The Awful Truth, or whatever his show was. I can’t really give you to much shit though, because I kind of want to see Sicko too. Let me know how it is.
My Queue is dying! There’s too many things that I don’t really care if I see or not.
1) The Mist – I’m pretty hyped on this one, but it has been on “very long wait” status for like 2 months now.
2) Alias – I never watched the show while it was on TV. I heard that some people liked it… but some people also liked Buffy. So, I’m not sure if I’ll like this or not.
3) Grace is Gone – I was pretty interested in this movie for a while. Who doesn’t like Cusack? Comes out next Tuesday.
4) Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior – Between watching The Forbidden Kingdom and catching 30 minutes of Dragon: The Bruce Lee story, I’ve wanted to check out some martial arts movies. Ong-Bak is supposed to be pretty b.a.
5) Resurrecting the Champ – I thought the trailer looked pretty good. Sam Jackson as a homeless ex-boxer? But the whole Josh Hartnett factor kills a lot of the excitement (at least he was okay in Lucky # Slevin…).
6) Firewalker – I remember enjoying this movie as a kid. Then I remember catching the end of it on TV while I was in college or so and it was terrible. I thought I’d rent it and find out the truth.
7) Kung Fu Hustle – Part of the Kung-Fu movie kick I’m going on. Chris said it was pretty good/funny. The trailor looks god-awful.
8) Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story – The Apatow comedies are so main stream yet so hit or miss. I’ve got it on the queue, but I don’t really care to see it to soon.
9) Shooter – I really dug the trailer for this movie. Everything about the movie actually sounds pretty good (yes, it has Marky Mark, but he is doing the action stuff so it works).
10) The Beach – Netflix predicts that I’ll give this movie 2 stars. I remember when it came out it was just another crappy Leo movie (this was at the height of the Titanic reign of terror). Now, I don’t have a bias for or against Leo. So, the movie doesn’t sound too bad.
By the way, I’d say Forbidden Kingdom is worth checking out. It would best be lumped in with classic kids movies of the 80’s (i.e. Karate Kid, Neverending Story, Princess Bride [kind of], etc.). It isn’t necessarily as good as those movies, but it definitely has the same kind of flare. If that sounds good to you, check it out.
It looks like you have a pretty decent list there. I can’t comment on Alias because I never really saw enough of it to know if it was good or not.
The Mist was a badass movie, and I especially like the black and white Frank Darabont version.
Grace is Gone looks like a pretty good movie, and I’ll be interested in seeing that as well.
I’m not sure how much you are going to like Ong-Bak. The story was awful, the acting was terrible, the fight scenes were spectacular. Tony Jaa might be the next big thing in martial arts, but I really didn’t like this movie all that much. It is very well hyped, but so was Oldboy.
If I were you, I might switch places between Kung-Fu Hustle and Ong-Bak. I did really enjoy Kung-Fu Hustle. Stephen Chow has an excellent eye for mixing comedy with action. There is a reason why this movie is the top grossing Japanese movie of all time.
I thought Walk Hard and Shooter were both pretty good movies. So, those are both deserving of seeing at least once.
The Beach is kind of crazy. I think at the time this movie came out there was that huge backlash against DiCaprio, and in response to that backlash DiCaprio did something that was kind of far out. That said, this movie is nowhere near his best work, but also nowhere near his worst. You could always switch this with Basketball Diaries and then you get a Dicaprio/ Wahlberg movie.
Overall, the list is a nice collection, if you ever receive any of them (I’m talking to you The Mist). If there is something you would rather see you should switch out Alias and Ong Bak. I thought Tony Jaa in the Protector was a little better. And you should try and see There Will be Blood.
so in case you don’t normally look, today is xbox360 deal day on Amazon.com. You go to the amazon site, look at the top of the page where it says today’s deals, click on that and they have a deal of the day (call of duty 4 today) and other deals every 4 hours. It looks like the 12 o’clock (1 o’clock where you are) deal is going to be scene it for 360. Usually they mark off 20 dollars or so, don’t know if this is of interest to you, but you should check it out anyway.
Chris, I think we decided that Scene it for the 360 isn’t the best choice for us… we can only play it where there’s an xbox. With regular Scene It, all you need is a DVD player and those are more readily available.
This doesn’t have much to do with your Queue, but, if you haven’t already, check out Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog at drhorrible.com (or something of the sort. Along with that, I forgot to tell you the other day that I just read a book called Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman. Definitely worth checking out.
I enjoyed Dr. Horrible. But I’m sure there’s too much singing in it for Mikey to even been interested in watching it. My friend is burning me a copy of the soundtrack. :)

So the ‘Incredibles’ huh? The superhero equivalent of ‘Cars.’ I fell asleep watching it and it was only early afternoon when I saw it.
January 5, 2007 at 3:08 pm |
The Incredibles is about superheroes. That alone makes it worth watching once. Also, I’ve heard a lot of good reviews for it.
January 5, 2007 at 5:38 pm |
I liked the incredibles, and when does idiocracy come out, i may have to pick that up myself
January 5, 2007 at 7:12 pm |
Idiocracy is out on DVD Jan. 9th

You should try “League of Gentlemen” Not the lame movie but an English TV series. Odd, black humor, weird charactoers. Just what you might like

Current British TV series obsession: Coupling.

Science of Sleep is next up. We’ll see if Gondry can follow up ESOTSM or if that was more Charlie Kauffman’s doing…
February 6, 2007 at 5:16 pm |
And I think I’m getting either Black Dahlia or Notorious Betty Page next.
February 6, 2007 at 6:15 pm |
I’m curious about the Gondry follow up as well. And I think that Hollywoodland will be better than either of those other dead fil star movies.

I change what I said earlier, I think that Bettie page may be better than the other two movies about dead film stars.
February 8, 2007 at 8:25 am |
I gave both Science of Sleep and Bettie Page 3 stars out of 5 on Netflix. Both had good parts, but something was lacking overall.
February 8, 2007 at 10:28 am |
Bettie Page got sort of boring in the second half.
February 8, 2007 at 12:48 pm |
Less nudity.

that’ll bring any movie down pretty fast

They finally sent me The Invincible Iron Man. I’ve had that on my queue for like two weeks.
Pretty nice timing though. I’ll get it on Saturday and can watch it on Sunday while Patti is gone.
February 9, 2007 at 12:44 pm |
nice, and then you can tell her about how great it was after you have sent it back.

We’ll see about the borat. I didn’t laugh in the trailers or in the 15 minute preview online. I’m renting it solely on your recommendation.

I don’t understand this list
April 4, 2007 at 10:55 am |
Meh, me neither. I’ve been trying to get stuff that both Patti and I can watch on Wed. and stuff that only I want to see on Sat. But, Patti doesn’t like very many good movies. Then she complains when I go off and watch a movie on my own.
You’ll learn all about this in a few months.
April 4, 2007 at 11:26 am |
I don’t give a crap what you get. I don’t really put you into consideration when I make my queue. Stop putting words into my mouth. Damn.

i get the Brisco (have gotten the Brisco), Go was an ok movie, and if you haven’t seen it then I can understand that one. Unforgiven was a good movie and also understandable. yeah i noticed that that queue did all of a sudden take a bit of a turn.
September 7, 2007 at 3:40 pm |
Actually, right now, most of the movies on the list are ones that I want to see. The only exception is “Miss Potter.”

I noticed you put Vertigo on our queue. Haven’t you already seen it? Not that I’m objecting to another Jimmy Stewart/Hitchcock….
Hey what if I found a framed poster of James Stewart to put in our bathroom? Could you handle that?
October 4, 2007 at 8:39 am |
I’ve never seen Vertigo, but I did see that one episode of That 70’s Show.
I dunno about Jimmy Stewart. He’s only been in one movie I’ve seen, and it wasn’t that great.
October 18, 2007 at 2:05 pm |
Mike and I just saw Vertigo. It was horrible. Mike kept wanting to turn it off, but I kept it on thinking it would eventually get good. It never did. Same thing with his pick of “The Fountain”. But I know you liked that movie so you may end up liking Vertigo.

Vertigo was weird, but good.

Blood Diamond=nice. Dicaprio should have won something for that performance. In my humble, Dicaprio loving opinion.

Yeah, but people say Moore lets the topic speak for itself on this one. Patti also wanted to see it.
I’ll waste a rental on it.

It isn’t necessarily as good as those movies, but it definitely has the same kind of flare. If that sounds good to you, check it out.

You could start putting a bunch of episodes of Six Feet Under on your queue for me to watch while I wait for my main stuff to come in. :)

Scene It for 40 dollars for the xbox.
