Friday Night Lights

February 4, 2008

Last night, I checked out the Pilot episode of Friday Night Lights.

I had never watched Friday Night Lights when it first aired for the following reasons:

1) I don’t like football

2) The show is called Friday Night Lights, but it was shown on Monday (they changed that this year).

3) I don’t like High School Football

4) I never saw the Friday Night Lights movie

5) Friday Night Lights abbreviation (FNL) is trying to rip off Saturday Night Live’s (SNL)

So, with all those reasons, I never saw the show until yesterday. What made me decide to watch the show yesterday? People hyping the crap out of it.

It started back when the show was just starting up. Bill Simmons, ESPN’s The Sports Guy, kept ranting and raving about how great the show was. Go so far as to make an open plea for people to watch and for NBC to bring it back for a second season.

In addition to that hype, lately, Chris has been talking it up. Saying that he is going to make me watch it when he comes down over Spring Break. He continued to talk about it as a must see show.

So, knowing that I had a bit of time on my hands last night (honestly, who watches the Super Bowl?) and knowing that I have access to all the episodes of FNL online (via Netflix and NBC’s website), I decided to give it a shot.

So, I sat down and watched the pilot on my desktop. The show starts up and talks about how great this one high school football program is and how a new head coach fell into the position. They go through the week with various practices and the team have a huge party at a car dealership (what?). Then they play a game on Friday.

While I never watched The O.C. or Melrose Place, FNL comes off feeling like what I imagine those shows were like. All about stupid teenage/relationship drama that doesn’t exist in real life. FNL goes down a similar, look at how messed up teenagers are but they are still good type storyline.

Then you get to the actually Friday Night game and it turns into Varsity Blues. Paul Walker is so bad ass, but then he gets injured. All of the sudden James Van Der Beek has to step up and win the game. But all of this happens with out the whipped cream bikini. So, it is basically a waste of time.

Anyway, I wasn’t into Friday Night Lights. I gave it 2 stars out of 5 on Netflix. Football is boring (that goes for both football and soccer).
