2006 Movies

Over on SilentBobSpeaks.com, Kevin Smith has made a list of his top 10 movies of 2006. The list is okay, but the real reason I bring this up is that he made a list of movies that came out in 2006. 1. Patti Says:

GRANDMA’S BOY – Surprised me. I thought I would hate it but I ended up liking it a lot. Definitely quotable. Possible Buy.

UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION—I rented this from Netflix a couple of weeks ago. I watched about 10 minutes of it and then had to turn it off. So awful. First one was a decent popcorn flick though.

NANNY MCPHEE—Cute, great use of Kelly MacDonald, but ultimately forgettable. Maybe watch twice.

SHE’S THE MAN – Cute. Had David Cross in it which is always a plus. Good for a watch on TV if there’s nothing else on.

V FOR VENDETTA – I enjoyed it, but I’d have to see it again to make up my mind whether it was really good.

SLITHER – I don’t like horror movies in the first place, so it was just okay.

THE BENCHWARMERS –should have waited for DVD rental, but at least it was better than Ricky Bobby.

AMERICAN DREAMZ – Dreamz with a “Z”! Watch it purely if you’re on the Disney Cruise and the rest of your family is off watching “Hercules: The Muse-ical.” Cute, but forgettable

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3 – I remember enjoying it, but if you asked me right now I couldn’t tell you what the plot was. I remember saying, “Wow that movie made me forget that Tom Cruise is crazy.” And there’s nothing too bad about that feeling.

THE DA VINCI CODE – Pales compared to the book, and the book was fluff at best. The book was like eating a hostess cake for a meal– tastes great going down, ultimately doesn’t do you any good in the nutrition department.

OVER THE HEDGE – “But I like a cookie!” I usually don’t like computer animated movies, but this one was funny and included one of my favorite men of the moment: Steve Carell. Extra kudos for it not being a Disney feature.

X-MEN: THE LAST STAND – Watch it for the Wolverine/Phoenix love scene. Meow.

CARS – Major snoozer. Owen Wilson wasn’t even all Owen Wilsony. I told you I don’t like computer animated movies…

CLICK – Pretty funny movie with a lot of heart. Good stuff. (Agree with Mike, nuff said)

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST – Too long and over use of the Kraken, but otherwise great and exciting. Loved Davy Jones and Norrington stole all of Jack’s fangirls!

CLERKS II – Funny-ish. Bad acting however expected still drags a film by the way. The only reason to watch Kevin Smith movies, IMHO is for Jay and Bob.

MONSTER HOUSE – Innovative CG movie that was reminiscent of an 80s kid flick. Might have to watch it again.

LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE – Funny, but drags in places. It’s the sort of movie that I would watch once in a great while.

TALLADEGA NIGHTS – Booooo! I wanted to walk out. Not funny at all.
THE ILLUSIONIST – Beautiful if sophomoric simple love story with added dimension of the male lead being a magician. Rewatchable, but perhaps not a purchase.

IDIOCRACY – Funny, but a little too long. May have been better as a TV series. Kudos for the Luke Wilson casting as the smartest man on the planet in the future.

THIS FILM IS NOT YET RATED – Awesome, awesome movie. Sums up my feelings about the MPAA. And they’re not good feelings, btw.

FEAST – I expected this to suck, so I actually enjoyed myself while watching it; however, that is due purely to the fact that I watched them making the film on Project Greenlight and was curious to see how they were going to make that mess into a coherent movie. Only watchable once though.

THE PRESTIGE – Quite possibly my favorite movie of the year. Superb cast apart from Johanssen and a script that is the exception to the rule: The movie is better than the book in this case. I’m convinced that Christian Bale can play ANYTHING! I’m definitely buying it when it comes to DVD this month.

STRANGER THAN FICTION – Forgettable, but I enjoyed it.

CASINO ROYALE – Probably the best James Bond film ever. I’m curious to see if they can top this one. Possible buy.

THE HOLIDAY—Oh Jude Law. Why must you be so god damned attractive? I want to hate him, I really do but I can’t and this movie is no exception. He is the light in this murky attempt at a splicing of two romantic comedies into one. I also don’t like Cameron Diaz. This then made me feel teeeerrribly guilty that I was more interested in her story than in Kate Winslet’s story. If only Winslet and Jack Black had chemistry and were focused more upon, I would have liked this movie a lot better. But as it stands, I only liked the Diaz part. As much as it pains me to say it. Makes this a throw away romantic comedy. Not unlike a paper towel.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM – Fun! Owen Wilson is correctly utilized here (as opposed to Cars). You pretty much can’t go wrong if you’ve cast Ben Stiller in your comedy and allow him to adlib all over the place. Not a buy, but would definitely watch again. (PS-Look at Dick Van Dyke bust a move in the credits! It’s astonishing!)

CHILDREN OF MEN – Highlight was Michael Caine. The rest of the movie was dreary with pseudo-urgency and unnecessary gore piled near the end of it. Burn this film.

PAN’S LABYRINTH – Cool! I love the elements of fantasy and reality and the symbolism was spot on. The actors were all excellent especially Doug Jones who doesn’t even speak Spanish! There was some graphic violence, but I think it was partially warranted.

    SO here’s MY top 5 of 2006!
    1) The Prestige
    2) Dead Man’s Chest
    3) Pan’s Labyrinth
    4) Casino Royale
    5) This Film Is Not Yet Rated
