Top Superhero Movies

November 17, 2006

I posted this on Marc’s blog. I thought I would elaborate on my list for those of you who care.

The correct Superhero movie top 10 list is:

1) The Punisher – Starring Thomas Jane and John Travolta.

I had just seen Kill Bill vol. 1 and was really upset with the way the action was done in that film. All martial arts and slo-mo. I blame the Matrix with their bullshit “bullet time” motion. I hate that stuff. It brought me to the point were I just wanted a Rambo-style action movie. The next day, I went to see The Punisher at the theater. It was exactly what I was looking for; a shoot-em-up action flick with a couple of nice homages to spagheti westerns. The right movie at the right time. That’s why it gets the number one ranking.

2) X-men 2 – You know who stars

The X-men are probably my favorite comic books heroes ever since the old 90’s cartoon. While the first one was good, the second one took it to a whole other level. I had tingles through most of the movie. One of the best sequals ever made.

3) X-men

See above. The movie was decent, but it takes a while to introduce all the characters and that slowed the movie down.

4) X-men 3

The plot was pretty good (a lot better than what I remember from the Dark Phoenix saga on the TV show. I hated that shit.). The director wasn’t that great and it showed. The sports equivalent would be your team having one of the true superstars of the sport and leads them to a championship, then that star leaves (free agency, trade, retire, etc.) and the next season the team just makes the playoffs and quickly gets knocked out (Using the Bulls as an example. They had Jordan. He retired. They seem to have a pretty good team this year, but it’s not the same hysteria as when MJ played).

5) Daredevil – Affleck

I am that guy who actually likes Ben Affleck. You knew there had to be one, and I’m it. I liked his turn as Matt Murdock. Not to mention good support from Jon Favreau and a cameo from one Kevin Smith. Jen Garner is pretty hot and I like her as Electra. For the most part, the movie worked for me. I just didn’t like the bird’s eye view shots of DD jump from rooftop to rooftop. It looked outrageously fake.

6) Batman the Movie – Adam West, Burgess Meredith

“Good thing I brought my Anti-Penguin Gas Pills.” Any movie with a line like that is good in my opinion. Not to mention the all-star cast.

7) Batman – Keaton

I remember liking this when it came out. The Batman rollercoaster definitely helps. I don’t think I could watch this movie again today. mainly due to my hatred of all thiings Tim Burton. How does that man get work? Honestly. Did you see that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie? Let me get this straight, Wonka has an elevator that can go absolutely anywhere. So they decide to go to Wonka’s pop’s house…and then park about a mile away. What is that?! Just direct the elevator to right in front of the house and walk in. Come on.

8.) Spiderman 2 – Alfred Molina

only up this high because of sweet ass video game and Bruce Campbell’s involvement.

9) Superman – Chris Reeve

I was actually not a big fan of this movie. I’m not sure how it made the list, but I would say it is better than Batman Begins or any of the nipple Batmans.
10) Spiderman – Macho Man Randy Savage

“You’re going nowhere.” Macho Man made this movie watchable. How come no one has made him into a superhero movie? It would probably get a high rating on this list.

Please note that I have not seen Fan. 4, Superman Returns, the Incredible Hulk, or Hellboy.

Upcoming Superhero movies that could rock the list:

1) Iron Man – Jon Favreau is the Man

2) Ant Man – Stupid name with shitty powers, but a fun character with Edgar Wright as director (Shuan of the Dead for the uninitiated).

Top Fictional TV Bands

November 13, 2006

I read a column over on IGN today about the top 10 TV show bands. You can read that article HERE.

It led me to think what are my favorite TV bands. I mean, if these bands actually existed and toured, which one would I most want to see live. This means that bands that actually played live or recorded albums are not going to hit my list (Sorry Monkees fans…or Partridge Brady Family Bunch).

Here is my top 5 list.

5. California Dreams – California Dreams

You get a young Kelly Packard live. And don’t get me started on Jake Sommers. Oh baby.

4. Phish Tahko – My Name is Earl

You get yourself Jason Lee and Ethan Suplee. Toss in the greatness of Giovani Ribisi. I am there. I might even stick around for the old guy lead singer.

3. Zak Attack – Saved by the Bell

They’ve got a hit song in Friends Forever. Casey Kasem has been hyping the shit out of them. And you get to see Kelly, Jesse, and Lisa live. Forget about it.

2. The Scrantones – The Office

If this band was real, I would have gotten them to do my wedding. I like the classic rock covers and Kevin is one of the best characters on the Office.

1. Creation – Freaks and Geeks

You get James Franco, Seth Rogan, and Jason Segel. Sure, they might not be able to get through one whole song, but they know where rock and roll come from. Plus, it is likely that Lindsey “Linda Cardellini” Weir would be at the concert. Say no more.

An honorable mention to The Blanks on Scrubs. As much as I like the show Scrubs, I’m not going to pay to see a barbershop quartet in concert.

So, what bands would you like to see in real life?
